General Information About Minnesota Marriage Records and Laws
Minnesota marriage records can provide a wealth of information for those searching for it. However, gathering these records can be a challenge in many situations. The information contained on such records can answer some of the most challenging questions, including information such as the names of family members and where they lived. In addition to genealogy searches, the Minnesota marriage records can also help with property searches and information regarding family lives.
This information can be valuable for many things. Keep in mind that every situation is very different. However, some of the best marriage records provide a significant amount of valuable of information.

In the state of Minnesota, marriage records can provide a range of different details. The state did require the collection and registration of vital statistics in 1870. In addition, most of those who were living in the state did report this information. However, the responsibility for collecting this information was put on the county, not the state itself. Formal records from that period forward for marriages are available through the county records. For the next 37 years, all information was collected for vital statistics by the county.

In 1907, the state did begin to require that all birth and death records to be provided to the state as well. The county clerk collected such information and then reported it to the state. However, nearly all marriage records have always been collected by the county rather than the state. Even today's marriages are recorded by the county in which they occur. For those searching for marriage records in Minnesota, the best source for this information is the following location:

Minnesota Department of Health
Section of Vital Statistics
717 Delaware St, SE
PO Box 9441
Minneapolis, Minnesota 55440

Keep in mind that for any records prior to 1900 or so, you may find it difficult to gather this information. Sometimes, the counties did not collect this information or it was not reported. Another source for information from the 1800's and earlier will be found at local churches and other religious facilities where the marriages took place. These locations kept the best overall information and likely still maintain it. Other sources for such information may be town clerks, especially in older cases. Some town halls maintain an archive of records for the city. This may be a good place to look for very old information.

Keep in mind that most Minnesota marriage records do not provide a great deal of information other than verification that the marriage took place. Information may include the name of those who were getting married, the location of the marriage, the official that presided over the event and the maiden name of the bride.

In some cases, the parents' names are on these records. In some cases, you may also find information regarding parent's addresses. To find this information can be challenging in some situations. However, Minnesota marriage records can be a great way to learn about a family's history especially when they are complete in the information provided.
