General Information About Georgia Marriage Records and Laws
Georgia marriage records can help you by providing a great deal of information about the people in the past. In some cases, individuals need these records to provide verification of a marriage. In other cases, property records and personal information can be obtained from these records. Perhaps the most popular reason to search for older records like this is to gather information for genealogy. Those who use these records will usually find them easy to obtain if obtaining them from the 1900's, but older records can prove more difficult to find.

In Georgia, marriage records were not always obtained and kept. In fact, prior to 1919, the state did not actually gather these records itself. Rather, county clerks and town clerks managed this information. Because it was done so differently in each location, it makes sense that individuals will find that only some of these early records are available today. However, there are a few things you can do to find the records you are looking for in the state.

In 1928, compliance to providing the state with all birth and death certificates began occurring. The state also kept a great deal of marriage records beyond that point. By June of 1952, most marriages were collected and archived by the state. Anything you may need since this time is available throughout the Georgia Division of Public Health.

If you require records from previous years, there is some good news. On the county level, Georgia marriage records have been kept since the 1700's. Most counties collected this information and, while not transferred to state archives, most of these records remain available by visiting the local and county clerk's offices. You may be able to gather this information from a local search, too. Each county is different, though.

For those who require information and Georgia marriage records since 1952, the best source for these is from the Georgia Division of Public Health. You can write to them at the following address:

Vital Records Department
Room 217-H 47
Trinity Avenue, SW
Atlanta, Georgia 30334-5600

It is also possible to gather some information related to marriage records by contacting the organization over the phone. You can do that at 404-656-4750. However, you will need to pay a fee of $10 to get this information. You can obtain certified copies of most marriage records, as well as divorce records, through the State Office. Certification may be an additional fee.

The Georgia marriage records available may provide information such as the name of those getting married, their location and religious background, the name of parents as well as the date of the marriage. In most cases, this information will include the address of the couple after the marriage, but this may not be available in all cases.
For those that need Georgia marriage records for legal purposes, county certified authentic records are often the best to select. Individuals can obtain these records for most of their needs assuming they have a vested interest in obtaining the records.
