General Information About Florida Marriage Records and Laws
Florida marriage records may provide you with the information you need to learn about your family or for property record search information. Some people use these records to help document the location of family members or even which religious facility they were part of. For those recently marriage, the state of Florida provides marriage records within four to six weeks through the local county clerk's office. However, for a marriage record search, there are a few more things you need to consider before you start the process.

In Florida, marriage records, along with other vital information was not always collected by the state or even local agencies. The first statewide push for this information was mandated in 1899 in fact. Birth and death records prior to 1917, though, can be hard to obtain. Many times, these may only be notations and in other situations the records are no longer available. They may be inconsistently available from the various portions of the state as well.

After 1917, the collection of Florida marriage records and other information was gathered more frequently. The documents from 1917 only required the documentation of births and deaths occurring in the state. It was not until 1927 that the requirement for marriages to be documented with the state's offices also occurs. This information, from 1917 onwards, is collected by the Florida State Bureau of Vital Statistics. If you require the collection of information from that period of time onwards, you can get it by contacting the following agency.

State of Florida Department of Health Vital Statistics
1217 Pearl Street
PO Box 210
Jacksonville, Florida 32231-0042

It is also possible to contact the location by phone for further information or for further inquiries. The phone number for the Vital Statistics department is 904-359-6900. However, this information may or may not be available through mail. The cost for all record searches for marriages dating from June 6th, 1927 onward is $5, though additional fees may also be required.

For those who need documentation and records from 1927 or previously, or from 1917 and earlier for birth and death records, the best place to collect this information is at local town clerk offices, though county clerk offices may also provide this information. You will find some information to be unavailable. If so, contact local churches or other religious organizations for documentation of marriage. During the 1800's and previously, many of the documents are solely with the official performing the marriage.

The gathering of important Florida marriage records remains important. Many of these documents contain information such as the names of those married, including maiden names, the location of the marriage, the official presiding over the marriage and the date. Some other information such as the address of those involved and parent's names may also be available to you.

Although Florida's marriage records since 1927 are easily available, those older than this are sporadically available. However, a thorough search should reveal most of the information you require. Take into consideration the availability of this information.
