General Information About Connecticut Marriage Records and Laws
Gathering Connecticut marriage records may be easier for you to do than you realize. The state has a long history and because of its strong government presence since the early founding of the country, many of the state's earliest records remain available. However, where you get this information from and what it contains may differ considerably from one location to the next. The use of these marriage records can help with genealogy record research or for other needs. Since most record information is available as a public record, you should be able to gather most of the information you need to complete your family tree.

In Connecticut, marriage certificates were not always recorded but the state does have one of the oldest documentation processes for this data. The first marriages in the state to be recorded were in 1640. By 1650, the gathering of the birth, death and marriages occurring in the state was something that was managed by the local town clerk. For marriage records from this time, you will need to find old documents from local archives. After the American Revolution and through the middle of the 1850's, the records available are less pronounced. There are many gaps in this information's recording due to a lack of office recording body.

However, in 1870, Connecticut marriage certificates became more readily standardized along with other vital records. The State Board of Health was established then and this began requiring the gathering of this data. However, you will not find this information available to you through the state. Rather, Connecticut marriage records remain the collection duty of the town clerk's. Many of these town clerks and county records document the birth, death and marriages of those in the state.

After July of 1897, though, copies of all Connecticut marriage records from the towns were sent to the State Department of Health for additional protection. For those who wish to obtain a marriage record from this time, the best route to take is to talk to local town clerks about achieve information. However, you can also contact the State Department of Health for verification information. To do so, contact the following:

You can gather more information and in some cases request this information over the phone by calling 860-566-2334. There is a fee associated with this information. The fee is $10 though this can change. Divorce, adoption, birth and death information and records are also available through the town clerk or the State's Department of Health.

The Connecticut marriage records you need are available to you. However, to gather this information, you will need to contact the appropriate location. The records may contain information such as the name of those getting married, the date and the location. Some also contain the name of the official serving over the union and the names of the parents of the couple. Addresses are provided on some of these documents as well. Documents prior to 1897 may be harder to obtain in some areas.
