General Information About Colorado Marriage Records and Laws
Colorado marriage records provide information that can help individuals to search for documents, their family history or even the religious affiliation of people in their past. Genealogy records do benefit from the use of these records. However, the collection of these records is not as commonplace just 100 years ago as it is today. Therefore, it can be hard to track down some of the information you may need. However, with this information, you can complete a family tree or learn about extended family members.

In Colorado, marriage records remain readily available for most people who were married in the state in recent years. If you are married, within a few weeks, you can visit the local vital records office to get an official copy of your marriage license. However, for those who wish to find marriage records that are significantly older, there are several key things to know about the state's collection of this information.

In 1875, Colorado began trying to collect official registrations for the births and deaths of individuals in the state. The Vital Records Office managed this. However, it was not a requirement at that time and it took some time before all people would record all data properly. By 1910, though, the successful implementation of the process began for all births occurring in the state. In 1900, all deaths were documented as well. However, even at this time, marriage records in Colorado remained available through local churches or courts depending on where the individual was married.

Between 1900 and 1939, the process became more regulated within the state. Nevertheless, for marriages occurring prior to 1900 and between 1939 and 1975, the best location for gathering this information is through the local county clerk's office rather than through any statewide agency. From 1975 through the present time, you can gather this information at the following address. There is also some collection of marriage records through this agency from the period of 1900 to 1939.
Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Vital Records
4300 Cherry Creek Drive – South
Denver, Colorado 80222-1530

You may be able to request a copy of these records by calling the agency at 303-756-4464 or by faxing your request to 303-782-5576. However, the best access to most documents is to visit the location directly to request it.

In order to obtain a state verification of a marriage, which is the only information that the state of Colorado will provide, you must pay a fee of $17 to the Clerk of District Court. Generally, the best access will come from the court where the marriage occurred. You can follow this same process to gather information about divorce records in the state.

The Colorado marriage records are public information, but actual copies of the marriage license are not available in most cases. Rather, you can see the record and gather information from it. It is important to have some information about those who were married, including a date, location and the names of all involved to get these records.
