The state did not officially require that these documents be sent to the state offices for filing until 1920. Some on file with this agency date back to 1889, though. Prior to this time period, only local towns and sometimes counties gathered information on the births and deaths occurring in the state. This often was done through the town clerk's office. For older records, finding local sources like this is usually necessary.

If you do not find the records you need through this source, there are other ways to gather New Mexico genealogy records. A good place to start with records searches is with the most local resource you have. If you know the county of the individual or even the town, then using the resources from those agencies is best. If not, consider the larger churches that were around during their lifetime. Many agencies and church organizations have records dating back through the 1800's. However, keep in mind those missionaries who came to New Mexico often kept fragmented records. This means that only a small portion of information may be available if at all.
 

Other resources for finding New Mexico genealogy records include the various military reestablishments and forts in the area. The Civil War records may provide some information. This may be limitedly available because of the more remote area and the lack of records on file. You can also turn to area cemeteries, especially those that were present during the 1800's or even earlier. These often contain data not only about the individual but also about his or her family. Take a few minutes to research the options available to you and piece together your family tree one step at a time. It can be a lot of fun to do that.
