General Information About Utah Death Records and Laws
In Utah, death records were not always kept in such a way that they would be available for searching or researching now. However, there are many records available for the last 100 years and often times much later in time. If you are in need of these death records, it pays to take the time to look through several sources to get them. You can use death records for such things as property ownership, determining where someone lived or even for family genealogy reporting. The more information you have the better when it comes to getting these records.
In 1898, the Utah state legislature required that central county records be kept for all collection of death records, as well as birth records. This meant that county clerks were required at the time to begin keeping separate records for both birth and death records. In doing so, this helped to formulate an actual record that remains searchable. However, in order to use this information, you will need to know the county of the person's death. These records were not originally sent to the state level.
Then, in 1905, the state began requiring death records to be collected in a statewide system. This process went into effect in 1905, but it would not become a requirement for some time. It also encouraged cities to begin collecting data related to a person's death. Cities in the state often have a large number of records on the deaths occurring within them and to residents. For those who are looking for records and know the city of the death, these city searches are going to be the best available. To obtain them, you will need to contact the city's archives, which will differ considerably from one location to the next.
If you are looking for death records in Utah from 1905 onward, you can begin your search through the statewide search. To do so, you can write to or visit the following address:
Utah Bureau of Vital Records
288 North 1460 West
Salt Lake City, Utah 84114
There is a fee to be paid for obtaining these records, in most cases. You also need to keep in mind that most death records that are older will take some time to find. The Vital Records department does not provide specific information related to how long a search will take, though.
It may also be helpful to search for Utah death records through other searches including religious organization searches. In Utah, the state did not require the reporting of marriages for some time, during that time many other vital records, including death records, remained something managed by the religious organization. If you know that the person was a member of such a religious organization, you may be able to find the associated death records on hand with those organizations. In addition to this, it is possible to local records at the township level as well. With numerous options for finding associated death records, it is possible for individuals to find nearly all records throughout the area.
