General Information On Indiana Criminal Records
In Indiana, criminal records provide a wealth of information regarding the criminal actions of an individual. These records are maintained through various resources in the state. A criminal record is only created when an individual commits a crime, is charged with a crime or other actions are taken to record data about a person's involvement in an illegal activity. The state of Indiana does provide for access to some of these records, but not all sources of information remain available to the public. It is a good idea to consider using various resources for gathering this information.

Indiana is an open record state. This means that anyone who wishes to access information from these records can do so by obtaining access to the proper database. These records contain some sensitive information about individuals. For many of these records, personally identifying information is available included, however no financial information is included. Most contain misdemeanor and felony charges and convictions.

For those who wish to obtain Indiana criminal records, the process begins with gathering as much information about the person as possible. There are two ways to perform this type of service, through a name search or a fingerprint search. In Indiana, the best way to get accurate records is to use a fingerprint search. The process is conducted through the Indiana State Police, under the Records Division. This agency gathers and maintains nearly all of the records in the state for any criminal actions.

It is possible to get this information in person or through a computerized search. However, you can mail or visit the following address for either option.

Indiana State Police
Criminal History Limited Check
PO Box 6188
Indianapolis, Indiana 46206

To get a fingerprint kit for the more thorough report, contact the agency by phone at 317 233-5424. It is also possible to call this agency for additional information related to the search or inquiry.

The question many people have, though, is who can gather this information. In Indiana, criminal records are public accessible. However, it may be a requirement for individuals to get permission from the person prior to making the request. The most common reason for this is employment. If an employer wishes to hire an individual, he or she may need to have the employee sign a waiver if the employer wants to perform a background check that includes a criminal history. This waiver gives the employer permission to gather this information.

Indiana criminal records for juveniles, or those under the age of 18, are not publically accessible. The only way to access the records of an individual who is under the age of 18 is to do so through a court order. This is not commonly given. Federal records including any federal convictions and charges are not included in state records. However, the FBI, which maintains those records for the entire country, does not allow public access to any of that information. Individuals can gather some public records from local law enforcement agencies as well.
