General Information About Alaska Court Records and Laws
The violent crime rate in Alaska is well above average, and Alaska's violent rape rate is higher than in any other state in the country. Therefore, if you are hiring a new contractor, nanny or other employee, you may need to consult Alaska court records in order to protect yourself and your loved ones.
Alaska court records are maintained by the Criminal Records and Identification Bureau as well as the Department of Public Safety. According to Alaska Statute 12.62.160, any person has the authority to access information related to Alaska criminal justice. The procedures to obtain such information are further defined by the Alaska Administrative Code.
The statute also provides authority to distribute additional information to licensing agencies or employers for the purpose of screening applicants, especially those responsible for the care of children and dependent adults. You also have the right to view or buy a copy of your entire record.
 
Types of Courts in Alaska
For cases involving tort or contracts up to $50,000, as well as $7,500, the records will come through the district court in Alaska. Alaska court records by the district court will include DWI/DUI cases, misdemeanors and cases of domestic violence, as well as non-parking traffic violations and emergency juvenile cases.
Alaska court records related to general trial cases go through the superior court. These cases include felony, contract, probate estate, domestic relations, tort, criminal trial, civil and mental health. District court appeals records also go through superior court.
Alaska court records from the court of appeals include information related to criminal prosecution, juvenile delinquency, post-conviction relief, extradition, probation, habeas corpus, parole, sentencing and bail.

How to Obtain the Information You Need
You may obtain Alaska court records by submitting a request based on a name search, or you can submit the fingerprints of the record subject. In fact, background checks using positive identification, such as fingerprints is recommended. If you search with only a name, you may fail to find Alaska court records that may have been filed under an alias or other name.
Presently, the cost of a name based background check through the Criminal Records and Identification Bureau is $20. The cost for a fingerprint-based search is $35. Several Alaska court records are available to search online using the person's name, ticket number or case number.
A request for copies of case files must be submitted in writing to the clerk of courts or records department where the case was filed. Requests for Alaska court records via email are not acceptable.
A written request for copies of Alaska court records should include the case number, the names of the involved parties, the case type (i.e. criminal, civil, small claims probate), as well as the name, address and telephone number of the person requesting the copy.
The majority of Alaska court records are available for inspection by members of the public. The cost for copies is twenty-five cents for each page. If you need a certified copy of a document, the cost is $5. You may also be required to pay a research fee of $15 per hour. In addition, you may have to pay a deposit on some requests for Alaska court records.
Keep in mind that Alaska court records for some proceedings, such as juvenile cases, are kept confidential and only accessible by the involved parties.
